I put myself in a bootcamp starting back in April and I just completed it. It was a Bootcamp for moms like me. I have had some huge epiphanies this year in a lot of areas in my life, health, parenting, relationships, marriage, and of course my two jobs. This Bootcamp helped me to see I have been treating some “Jobs” in my life more like hobbies giving them attention when I feel like it versus showing up and doing the work day in and day out. This bootcamp along with some other training helped me realize that in most areas of my life I am doing okay to fair. What you might be thinking, but Dr Mary you are successful?! True I have had success and achieve new levels in certain areas of my life but…
The Problem with Success is a Little Bit…
What do I mean by that? See the problem with losing weight, increasing your income, having good kids, having a good marriage is you can fall into complacency that
- “Hey, I am doing good”
- “My marriage is better than most people”
- ” My income is great”
And with complacency you don’t work on being better because you think this is “good enough”.
Or you fall into a trap I heard termed “EGYPT” … If you are familiar with the Bible and the Israelite’s journey. During a famine Joseph saved his Father and brothers families and brought them (Goshen a property of Egypt). The land was rich farm land and perfect for their cattle and sheep. The Isrealites grew exponentially over the few hundred years but what was once their saving grace, their land of plenty became their enslavement. Literally they became the Egyptian slaves.. YIKES….
Complacency vs. Greatness
Think about it. Are you getting so comfortable or complacent in some area of your life you’ve gotten stuck? When it comes to health, marriage, your career or business, have you started to say things like…
- “I don’t need to eat good because I am skinny”
- “I workout I can drink and eat what I want”
- “I am young still”
“My parents lived to their 90’s”
- ” We’ve been married so many years we are just fine”
- “I don’t need to put effort into looking my best”
- “My spouse will never cheat on me”
- “They will never fire me they need me”
- “This money is coming in every month I can spend it how I want now.”
- ” I am at a level of success in my home business I get paid monthly now I don’t need to work anymore”
These attitudes keep us in average to good relationships, marriages, bodies, jobs, careers, businesses but we never get to our full potential because we stop learning, growing and working towards being our best. I think this happens because where we came from was so bad, poverty, struggle, being single, debt, brokenness that when our lives get good we just stay there, a few steps away from greatness.
With complacency you don’t work on being better because you think this is “good enough”.
The Key To Greatness: Awareness
I am encouraging you today to get out of Complacency. I AM CALLING YOU to WAKE UP to your EGYPT. This week take a good look at areas of your life that you might think are GOOD now but could be BETTER. Look at things in your life that were once a blessing but maybe now are binding you with stress, financial burdens, unfulfillment, or worry — become aware of them.
Seriously take the time to ponder this stuff.
Start a journal and write down areas of your life that you want to go from GOOD to GREAT… or maybe you are still in the FAIR or POOR group and you just want Good. Then I encourage you to join me on my Journey from Good to Great. It is so much more fun if we can do things together.
[Our] attitudes keep us in average to good relationships, marriages, bodies, jobs, careers, and businesses.

The Total Wellness Doc and Mom
How are you? Did you have a good week and weekend? I have ever been enjoying precious time with my mom. She is here for a 2 week trip to help me with the kids and many other things while I travel for business.
It’s been a great week and we even got massages in the other day. I had my therapist use Blue Cypress oil in my massage and it was such a deep relaxation. This precious oil comes from Australia and its history of coming to the market is unique, sad and victorious. I promise to share more soon. I am so proud to be partnering with such amazing pioneers and world changers.
But a part of my heart has sad for some families and friends. One of my good friends is going through cancer treatments, another team member just lost her sister, and an acquaintance Homeschooling mom suddenly lost her 8 year old daughter this past week. Can you imagine? It’s something we never think will happen to us, death of a child, loved one, cancer. Most of us spend our days thinking we have years to live with our loved ones, but what if you don’t?
This week I want to encourage you to look at where you are spending your time. Are you making time for loved ones? Take a hard look. What is important? Sarah’s soccer game or taking the day to go visit a loved one. Is attending another weekend meeting as important as going to see your mom for the day?
I spent a decade of my life living like my school or business was the most important thing in my life. I put everything below my business including my marriage, family and friends. I regret the years I lost and see now how much time I wasted. You can have both I promise. I am learning how to have a great marriage, time with family, friends and run a business.
If you want to join me on this journey stay tuned to these blogs and follow me on Facebook and Instagram at https://www.facebook.com/TheTotalWellnessDocandMom/ or https://www.instagram.com/drmarystarr/
There’s still time to enter the Mother’s Day Giveaway, if you haven’t done so yet, there’s still time to let a mom you know know she’s appreciated.

10 years ago my husband together earned more than $80,000 dollars a year yet we were BROKE. We were drowning in credit card and consumer debt, fighting about how we spent our money and the debt we were in, and sadly going deeper and deeper into the abyss monthly. We owned nothing lived in a small 2 bedroom $450 dollar a month apartment and yet we couldn’t keep from using those credit cards.
Does that story sound familiar?
Do you live with credit cards you want to pay off?
Are you struggling living paycheck to paycheck?
If that is you I want to encourage you that there is hope. We have done it and dozens of our friends and family have too.
- We have gotten out of credit card debt, own our cars, and total have paid off $330,000 in debt.
- My friends RJ and Sue Mack just paid off $21,000 in debt in 6 months.
- My girlfriend Angela Anderson paid off almost $42,000 in 2 years as a teacher.
Are you ready to be on the other side of your debt and get your finances in order?
If you are ready then I want to invite you to join us for our upcoming WAR on DEBT Classes starting in May…

So you may have heard a rumor or seen a vague post on Facebook that my family is moving to California. It is true we are. Mid November we will be California Residents. Why such a radical change and why California?
In late July my husband got a phone call from a personal friend telling him about this position coming available at his company. He talked quite a bit about the awesomeness of the company, culture, and opportunities. Although my husband wasn’t looking for a job he was intrigued and kept an open mind and started doing his own investigation.
Have you heard of the company Roku? Maybe you have one of these devices in your home. A Roku device or Roku TV let’s you watch TV your way. No more multiple remotes and 10 minutes to figure out how to get what you want. We have been users of this device for several years now. This simple inexpensive device makes exercise, cooking, cleaning, homeschooling and date nights SO MUCH BETTER.
First thing in the morning the kids watch a PBS learning show while we make breakfast and organize the day. No matter what time it is or what learning show the kids want to watch (Sesame Street, Word World, Nature Cat) the Roku device let’s us watch them on our schedule. You can get a variety of free channels. For days when we can’t get outside our Homeschool Gym Class includes a Youtube Fitness Blender “Kids Move”. I love my K-LOVE and Elevation Channels and listen to worship music and a Stephen Furtick sermon throughout the week.
Some channels you may want have a minimal monthly charge. We have Netflix and PureFlix. Netflix Leap Frog Learning shows have helped my kids learn their alphabet, phonics, shapes, numbers, and now words and math so that time gets counted as part of HomeSchooling a couple times a week. Do you want a cheap but inspiring Date night? Try a Pure Flix movie with your honey? We love watching these uplifting movies.
Preparing dinner wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for the Roku device. My 6 year old and 3 year old can easily turn on their favorite learning show while my hands are messy making dinner. My Roku device also gets my house cleaned easier. How? I use their favorite Netflix show or movie as a reward for “getting our work done” on cleaning days.
It may sound like we watch a lot of TV, but in fact the kids watch less then 2 hrs a day and most of it is focused learning. Before when we just had TV or Cable they ended up watching more and less quality TV. The Roku gives us more control and specifics with the programming that goes into their little heads. We estimate the device and channels we pay for saves us at least $300 a year compared to basic Cable TV and the Red Box Movies we used to get. Plus the sanity and time savings is priceless.
Roku was founded by CEO Anthony Woods the INVENTOR of the DVR. His company Roku which means 6 in Japanese is the 6th company Mr Woods has founded. Mr Woods has been instrumental in many of the amazing things we all enjoy including streaming movies. As my husband investigated Roku and found it to be an amazing company filled with talented people. He was excited for the chance to work there so he started the application and interview process.
It was a hard process. He went through some tough interviews and at several points we thought he was rejected. But thanks to God, personal referrals, JOB DOMINATION, and lots of prayer he received his acceptance and approval letter October 11th, 2016.
We all are extremely excited and of course nervous about this new adventure. We are moving from the Privacy of the woods in a small town of 7000 people spread out over almost 600 square miles…. To 30,000 people packed into 11 square miles….. WOW. It is definitely going to be different. The freedoms and lifestyle we enjoyed in Florida are going to be missed. But it’s time to do hard things expanding our territory, learning, developing, and growing .
When we stay in a comfort zone of convenience, routines, and sameness we don’t grow. When we stretch ourselves to do something different, to use our talents and skills we grow and make the world a better place.
I am super proud of my husband. He is a talented incredible genius of a man but he doesn’t like change. He is stretching himself to take this leap of faith. He is applying his talents and growing his skills so he can make a difference for the company but more importantly for his family. His stepping out in faith will not only contribute to the success of Roku but ultimately change our family for generations. His example to our children and wise stewardship of the financial blessings will change the trajectory of our future.
Jay and I are looking forward to this new adventure with Roku. We understand that what we are saying YES to is much more than a job.
What decisions will you make today that will help you grow as a person? What risks will you take to change your future generations? What talents are you not using right now? What skills do you need to learn or sharpen to improve your life? Are you willing to stretch yourself and grow? We hope so.
Last night I interviewed a couple who would like to partner with us in business. This couple reminded me of where Jay and I were just 7 years ago. A few minutes into the conversation we realized they were DESPERATE to make their home business work just like we were years ago. Why? Because they were literally drowning in debt and were robbed of quality time and freedom in their lives. They were slaves to a JOB and working. Like us they felt they had no choice but to do what they were doing all along just becoming more and more DESPERATE to find a way out of the pit of poverty.
On the outside Desperate Diane and David (we will call them) are living the American Dream. Living in a great neighborhood, in a beautiful $200,000 home, their kids are going to the best schools, and David the main earner in the family has a DREAM JOB earning over 6 figures a year. But look a little closer and you will find so much stress, tension and despair. David commutes 2 hours a day and most nights doesn’t get home until after 8 pm. His health has suffered and recently he had a minor car accident because he fell asleep at the wheel coming home from work.
Diane is an amazing wife and mother who cares for their home and family mostly by herself. She works a seasonal job earning an extra $2000 a month. She will work 30 hours a week during the kids’ school time and sleep time. She loves the work but it’s grueling as she sacrifices her sleep and sanity. This is what she said about the extra weekly paycheck she gets during her seasonal job. “Its like a million dollars to us. It gives us room to breathe a little and takes the stress off of our finances and keeps us from using our credit cards for groceries and day to day expenses.” Do you know that feeling? Do you know what it’s like to have to use your credit card to pay for day to day expenses?
They have $25,000 dollars in credit card debt, plus they have Student Loans, Car Loans, Medical Debt, and a Mortgage. Even though they earn great money they spend everything and then some every month. WHY? Because they are in POVERTY. See Poverty isn’t just for those earning under the Poverty Line. It’s a label for anyone who uses all the money they earn every month.
Is that blowing your brain? Maybe you are thinking how can you call me poor, I earn more than $60,000 a year. I can call you poor if you are spending all the money you earn in a year and then some.
Let me share our story of poverty with you.
This past year our home business parent company gave my husband and I a surprise letter at our company convention to be backstage at a certain time for a HISTORICAL AWARD. We thought simply it was because we had been in the company for 15 plus years and they were awarding us a longevity award. As we took the stage with more than 25 other leaders from our company the MC explained that every member who was on stage was part of an elite group who have earned 1 MILLION DOLLARS or more in the company. My husband and I looked at each other and our hearts sank, we turned a few shades of pale and immediately got sick to our stomachs… WHY???? Because simply we had earned over 1 million dollars and SPENT over 1 million dollars… AGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH! We had no significant savings, do not own a home, don’t own our vehicles yet, and still have over $100,000 in Student Loan Debt.
So what is the difference between Desperate Diane and David and my husband and I… ONE THING. See in 2008 Jay and I became serious about digging out of the Pit of Despair. We got a hold of a Training Program that gave us a plan to get back on track. We worked that plan really well for 3 years and paid off more than $150,000 in debt before we started to slack again. I can give you a list of excuses why we became lazy again but that is all they are… EXCUSES.
Our household income went significantly up so there seemed to be less stress and our lives got busier when my husband started a new job and we started a family. So again we would spend all we made. We also started investing in some things without wise counsel, which took more than $100,000.
Although it set us back some we still have been able to pay off $280,000 in 6 years and 8 months. WOW, right? Some people would be totally out of debt if they had just stuck to the plan, but sadly we made more debt because we made more money. It’s such a slippery slope you can fall down when you have the paycheck or in our case a commission check that comes every month. It’s dangerous unless you have the skills to handle money correctly.
So during our interview with Desperate Diane and David we told them that most people with that much financial stress in their lives don’t usually find significant success in their own home business right away unless they get their money management and debt under control first. We also have made it a requirement for our new team members and staff to take this Financial Program.
The Programs are:
The greatest feeling in the world is paying off your debt and getting out of bondage. It’s amazing to watch our team members and staff create a new happiness and lightness to their lives. They are happier, healthier, and are way less stressed. THEY ARE BETTER Employees, Business Developers, Parents, Spouses, Friends and People.
When you break free from POVERTY it is a freedom like you and I can’t even imagine. I have had a little taste of it and I look forward to the day that we are completely free. My husband and I also look forward to the day that YOU are FREE. I hope you will make the investment in your future happiness by getting
God Bless your Success,
